JAZZ
The next Speakeasy features an extended set by local 'global groove' specialists Iroko, along with sets from vocalist Kate Polak and the Speakeasy house band.
Iroko is led by Jane Hollingworth on percussion, and will be serving up an energetic mix of Afrobeat, Arabic-influenced jazz, and Latin American rhythms, with tunes by Fela Kuti, Ibrahim Maalouf and Abdullah Ibrahim, some original compositions and their own groovy versions of a couple of jazz standards. Their recent album gives a taste of what to expect: https://iroko.bandcamp.com/track/fly-with-me.
Kate Polak will be singing cool contemporary jazz and powerfully soulful ballads alongside her band of fine Cambridge jazz musicians, including Matt Kibble (soprano sax), Yashodaka (keys) and Pete Hill (bass) — as showcased at their monthly residency Tram Tracks (@tramtrackscambridge on Instagram).
Alastair Appleton will lead the well-oiled Tram Speakeasy house band machine on tenor sax, with polished renditions of modern jazz standards. Arrive at 7.30 so you don't miss a beat!
